Rosebro, Martin Advance to Finals in Richmond Women's City Amateur Tournament
By CAMERON BRANSCOMB
Friday’s final matches are set after Thursday’s semifinal matches. Reigning champion Fei Rosebro has made it to the Championship Flight finals for the second consecutive year.
Rosebro won her match against 2022 runner-up Liza Lewis. The match concluded on the 16th hole as Rosebro was up three with two holes remaining. “It’s been amazing playing again. Everyone is super friendly, and everyone is always coming by and saying good luck,” said Rosebro.
She’ll face Arianna Martin in the finals. Martin was paired with five-time champion Boodie McGurn. Martin took the lead on the front nine, winning holes five through eight. As the pairing approached hole 16, a gathering of spectators began to form. McGurn won the hole by one, but Martin secured the win, being up four with two holes left.
In only her second appearance in the Richmond Women’s City Amateur tournament, Martin said she felt a bit nervous going against the five-time champion. “Everyone kept on telling me she hits the ball straight, she’s consistent, she’s a good putter,” said Martin.
The 27-year-old has been balancing her love of golf while also working as a nurse. “When I first started with my job, I would work my three 12-hour shifts, so I would have four days to practice. Now I work a little more,” she said.
As the tournament approaches the final day, Martin said she’s not used to playing this many consecutive days of golf, but the course has been amazing all week long.
Now, as 20-year-old Fei Rosebro and Arianna Martin prepare to meet in the finals, they reflected on the importance of being role models for young women golfers. “I remember growing up and going to junior tournaments and seeing high schoolers or girls two or three years older than me. It really inspired me,” said Rosebro. “They want to see someone who’s close to their age. I think it’s great seeing Fei, who’s 20 years old, in college and playing golf. She is the representation that people need to see,” said Martin.
The Championship Flight begins at 9:40 a.m. For the full championship Friday schedule, head to the Richmond Women’s Golf Association website.
