The 96th annual Richmond Women’s City Amateur Championship marks another chapter in Katherine Story’s golf journey. Story returned to the tournament after 25 years.
As a teenager, Story competed in the Richmond Women’s Golf Association’s junior tournament, playing at the same Meadowbrook Country Club. “Growing up as a kid, there was a really amazing community and mentor of women then; and now coming back, the women are so inclusive, so encouraging, cheering for each other—it’s just a great community of women golfers,” said Story.
Story’s father introduced her to the game of golf, and her mother played as well. As a mother of two girls, whom she hopes will play in the future, she spoke about how important it was to have that support system of older women when she was younger. “Being out there as a kid and being shy and nervous, you need those women to take you under their wing and show you the ropes and be kind and encouraging to keep the younger generation of golfers going,” Story said.
Passionate about the sport of golf, the RWGA makes it their mission to be the teachers for the next generation of female golfers. “You don’t want this game to ever die out, and the older women are always so encouraging of younger women to help bring them along. They’re always introducing me to someone I don’t know and there for advice. It’s been wonderful,” Story said.
After a 25-year hiatus, Story hit the course on the first day of match play on Tuesday, saying the course is in fantastic shape.
In the championship flight, reigning champion Fei Rosebro won her match to move on to the quarterfinals, as did Arianna Martin, who faced last year’s runner-up, Helen Im. Five-time champion Boodie McGurn also moved on to the quarterfinals.
Flight one quarterfinals will get the day started on Wednesday, as Mary Allen will tee off against Beth Musick at 8 a.m.
