Blue skies and 85-degree weather made for perfect conditions on the first day of the 96th annual Richmond Women’s Amateur Golf Championship.
First-time Richmond City Am competitor and Richmond Women’s Golf Association member Delphine Wright is competing in her first Richmond Women’s Golf Tournament and expressed how welcoming the RWGA community has been. “It’s a whole new experience for me. Meeting the ladies has been really good; everyone’s friendly. I’m enjoying meeting the new ladies and playing different courses,” Wright said.
Playing on the Meadowbrook Country Club course for the first time, Wright was impressed by the course. “It was in excellent condition. Fairways, greens—it was a little difficult but very enjoyable,” she said.
Maria Humphrey had the best hole of the afternoon, scoring an eagle on the par-4 fourth hole, but Katie Watson emerged as the day’s top finisher. Watson, who finished just two over par with a score of 73, won the medal for the lowest score, a title last year’s champion Fei Rosebro won.
Tuesday’s championship flight will feature some intriguing matchups, starting with reigning champion Rosebro, who will be paired with former champion Maggie Balch. Balch shot 83 on the first day to secure the 16th seed. “With match play, you’re taking it more hole by hole. I feel like it’s a bit easier to bounce back when playing match play,” Rosebro said in anticipation of Tuesday’s round.
Sixth seed and last year’s runner-up Helen Im will face one of the tournament’s youngest golfers, 11th-seeded Arianna Martin. In the second and 15th seed matchup, Monday’s winner Katie Watson will compete against five-time champion Boodie McGurn.
Flight two will begin Tuesday’s pair play at 8 a.m. The championship flight will start at
9:04 a.m., beginning with Fei Rosebro and Maggie Balch.
The full flight schedule can be found on the Richmond Women’s City Amateur website.
