By: CAMERON BRANSCOMB
The Meadowbrook Country Club will host the Richmond Women’s Golf Association's 96th annual Richmond Women’s City Amateur Championship on June 3.
The Richmond City Am returns to Meadowbrook Country Club for the first time in over a decade. Opening in 1957, the course has a history of producing PGA professional talent, including Lanny Wadkins, Bobby Wadkins, John Rollins, and Adam Ball. The women will play from the courses’ red tees reaching 5242 yard across the course. Meadowbrook’s par-70 layout will challenge golfers with tight fairways lined with trees and smaller greens.

Kicking off on Monday, 69 women will compete in the qualifying round, including four returning champions: Peggy Freeman (three-time champion), Boodie McGurn (five-time champion), Maggie Balch (three-time champion), and Nevia Cashwell (one-time champion). Current reigning champion Fei Rosebro will also return as she automatically qualifies for champion play.
The 20-year-old University of Virginia student won the tournament in her first year of competition. That early success hasn’t put any pressure on the returning champion. She said she’s heading into the week looking to win but isn’t putting too much pressure on herself, wanting to go out and just have fun.
As one of the younger competitors, Rosebro had the chance to learn from other veteran golfers. “Last year’s qualifier was with a former champion, so just talking with her was really cool,” she said.
This year, Rosebro enters the tournament with another year of experience. “People underestimate how much of a mental toll it takes just to be focused for three to four hours at a time, even though the swing may take a second or two. So being focused on your next shot, it’s something that I’ve had to work on too,” she explained.
If Rosebro completes the repeat, she’ll be the second consecutive back-to-back Richmond City Am champion, since Kristine Rohrbaugh did it in 2021-2022.
The top 16 after Monday will move into the championship flight and be seeded by qualifying scores. The remaining golfers will be sorted into flights by their qualifying handicaps.
